There is no universal requirement for all commercial cleaners to undergo Police vetting. Requirements depend on the role and site. Clean Planet Wellington uses Ministry of Justice criminal record checks; these are not equivalent to Police vetting.
What insurance should a commercial cleaning company carry in NZ?
At minimum, a commercial cleaning company should carry public liability insurance covering third-party property damage and personal injury. Employers liability insurance and equipment insurance are also standard for reputable operators. Always ask for a certificate of insurance before signing a contract - not just a verbal confirmation.
Do commercial cleaning companies follow NZ health and safety laws?
They are legally required to under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015. As a PCBU (Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking), a cleaning company must identify and manage risks to workers and others affected by their work. Ask any prospective cleaner for their HSWA compliance procedures before signing a contract.

Liability depends on circumstances. If a cleaner causes a hazard (wet floor without signage, equipment left in a walkway) and someone is injured, the cleaning company's public liability insurance would typically respond. Our staff are trained in wet floor signage and hazard management, and we carry full public liability insurance. If you are ever in doubt about a specific incident, contact us directly and we will respond same day.
